Yoga Teachers, Experts Offer Help for Addiction

You don’t need to be a social scientist to see that addiction is one of the biggest issues in our country. You just have to look at the way it manifests in our culture, through eating disorders, credit card debt, liver disease, homelessness, and porn obsession. If you or anyone you know suffers from addiction, there’s an upcoming online 4-day conference, led by one of the world’s leading yoga teachers, that you might want to put on your calendar.

The Recovery 2.0 Beyond Addiction Conference is a free online seminar, happening March 17-21, that brings together the brightest minds in recovery today to offer groundbreaking information, support, and practices for those trying to beat an addiction. It was created by Tommy Rosen, a Los Angeles yoga teacher who recovered from drug addiction and alcoholism 21 years ago with the help of yoga and meditation, and has since been teaching successful Yoga for Addiction Recovery workshops around the country.

Rosen identifies the five main addictions as drugs, alcohol, food, sex, and money. However, he adds on to that four more addictive behaviors (which he calls the four aggravations): negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment. “[Addictions] are behaviors we continue to do despite the fact that they bring negative consequences upon us,” he says in a video on his website.

In this conference, which goes from 12pm PST until 5pm or 6pm each day, you can stream live talks by leading teachers, scientists, writers, counselors, healers, and other addiction experts. The schedule contains nearly 50 presenters including Noah Levine, a Buddhist teacher, author, and counselor who has often taught in juvenile hall and prison; Chelsea Roff, a yoga teacher and writer who recovered from eating disorders, and Dr. Marc Lewis, a developmental neuroscientist and former drug addict who will talk about the science behind the addicted brain.

The conference is presented by Entheos, a virtual Academy that helps teachers share their wisdom on conscious and optimal living. All you need to do to register is go to the Recovery 2.0 site and submit your email address. You’ll then be sent the full schedule and all of the materials necessary for registration. All talks will be available within 24 hours of their live streaming. If you are unable to attend, the whole conference will be available for purchase for $99 here.
