If You Could Do It Naked, Would You?

In a recent interview with the NY Times, Law and Order actress Tamara Tunie shared a little insight into what her yoga practice is like:

"At 1 I'm at the Bikram yoga studio in the neighborhood. There we sweat and stretch and focus for 90 minutes. Bikram, for those who don't know yoga, is also called the hot yoga--because the room temperature is over 100 degrees. If you could do it naked, you would, but with 30 people in the class, it wouldn't be pretty. It's somewhat torturous, particularly if I've had a couple of drinks at the clubs the night before. But of the 30 people, most of them probably have hangovers."

I want to hear from you Bikram (and heated vinyasa or Power Yoga) practitioners out there. If you could do it naked, would you? And how often do you go to yoga class hungover?

Gee, Erica. That's getting a little personal, don't you think?

Lucky for me, I don't practice Bikram or other hot yoga, so I can just sit here and wait for all the other interesting responses to come in!

although I haven't tried Bikram yoga I don't think I would want to do it naked. I'd be too afraid something would happen below the belly that may do damage. The joys of being Male. As far as being hungover I don't drink so no worries of that.

Um, no. I've never gone hungover. LOVE Hot Yoga, but can't imagine going when I can't focus on the beauty that it is. I don't go for the torture... I go for the "me" time, and the blessings that I experience when I go. And naked? No. It has nothing to do with comfort... but everything to with enlightenment. If I'm all alone, whatever I wear, as long as I can focus. Chances are, the naked thing would be a distraction for me, even alone.

Seriously, do people go hungover to detox? Why have too much to drink anyway? Then, go to Hot Yoga the next day? Makes no sense to me. Care for yourself, but take care of yourself as well.

first off, i wouldn't do a bikrams class.
definitely don't believe in such practices. i do love a good hot yoga class, that is - hatha yoga in a hot room.
and secondly, i don't drink, never have.
i honestly don't think i've heard of anyone going hungover...i wasn't aware people did bikrams..hungover?
i would however do yoga naked. probably in a more private environment than a crowded classroom, but nonetheless, i would give it a go.

I don't know about the naked thing but just can't understand why everyone has a problem with the loin cloth I wear to class...

I would not do it naked - neither alone nor in a group. As a woman, I feel that a few "things" get in the way. Plus, when you are sweaty, I think the fabric helps soak that up a bit. It's hard to hold a pose when you are too wet.

At home, sometimes I will do yoga in my underwear but not naked.

I've tried to do yoga at home naked and it feels weird. Even though I am a fairly muscular guy, I have just recently adjusted to wearing a tank top and tight shorts to yoga. I am not a prude by any means (nude hiking, swimming, sunbathing), but there are some things I don't need to share or have shared during my yoga practice. Besides, in my Iyengar classes the clothing is a definite plus when using the yoga wall!

Anyone who can get thru' 90 mins of Bikram hungover and dehydrated from the start deserves a medal. As doing a naked class I'd need to at the front of the class. Being at the back of a large class observing 30+ naked Prasarita Padottanasanas...... Hmmm I'm not sure, it may help keeping the focus within!

It's not the naked thing I have a problem with, it's the hot thing! I tried it, nearly passed out, and decided that if I don't go outside in 100 degree weather...why would I pay to do yoga in 100 degree room? But naked, now I do that in the privacy of my own room. You have to be totally comfortable with yourself though. It's one less obstacle between you and the energy of the Universe. Try it sometime, in your bedroom where you are already used to being naked, and hit a few poses. I always end up in child's pose and it feels like a re-birthing. It's fabulous!

I used to practice these styles of yoga. I woudn't give up clothes! For sure you get sweaty, but it's just too convenient to have a shirt or pants to wipe the sweat on so your mat doesn't turn into a slip and slide...or for that matter your own leg. Clothes act as sweat wicks!

I love doing hot room yoga, but I couldn't imagine doing it naked. It seems like my clothing helps keep me dry. I think that doing yoga hungover is just asking to be dehydrated. That's a big risk to your health.

I've practiced yoga naked at home and it defiantly felt weird. Now imagine adding heat to this, YUCK. Also, i don't think its safe. Sweat rolling down on the mat creating puddles is yelling wrist injury! Practicing Bikram hungover helps cure it fast, especially the detox poses really get you sweating all the "toxins" out of your body. But of course, its not the smartest idea to drink that much to begin with. Your body is your temple : )

No. Never.

Should we even pay heed to what a celebrity says about yoga just because she's a celebrity?

Next topic, please!

I say let's all have fun and hang out together. Big
love, Neo

"first off, i wouldn't do a bikrams class.

Umm...Bikram Yoga IS "hatha yoga in a hot room."

Naked? No. Nearly naked, yes, but there are certian poses where, as a guy, you don't want your genitalia flopping around. You could hurt yourself.

As someone said, Bikram yoga is a hath yoga but not yoga as a whole.
So for hath yoga. Even if alone, my answer will be no. The self body will cause a distraction, leave other bodies, as one is at constant movement.

But if you meditate in sitting or standing or sleeping mode, it does not matter you are clothed or not. Its the mind. In Digamber Jainism, they consider sky as clothes and it is the most non-violent, self tolerant religion. You can sit in bath tub or stand without any clothes in river and meditate.

But cloth is always good as it saves your delicate part from getting hurt or get bitten by some strange bug at wrong place ;)))

Hmmm... yoga is about being gentle to your body and to yourself. In my opinion, the use of the word torturous in a statement about yoga does not fit. And getting hung over is not kind to the body, especially if you are planning to go and torture yourself more by putting yourself in the dangerous situation of being physically active in a hot (dehydrating) room.

I would definitely NOT do hot yoga hungover. But I might try it naked in the privacy of my own home (undies might be more comfortable though). I find that room temperature is best for practicing yoga as I get hot enough from my movement. I rarely sweat when doing yoga anymore, and I enjoy the way bare skin feels as body parts make contact with each other. In a way, it allows me to gain greater awareness.

I have to admit I have done yoga hungover. Not hungover like hungover-because-i-took-10-shots-last-night hungover because I don't drink that much, but If I go to dinner and have a glass or two of wine there is NOTHING better than to, a couple of hours later, after your food is somewhat on the way to digestion, a heated yoga class. I wouldn't reccomend Bikram, But heated vinyasa is amazing. Wine makes me tired and if I go to sleep on a couple of glasses I will most likely wake up with a headache- but not if I do Heated Vinyasa Yoga before I go to bed! It does feel a bit awful at first- you can literally feel the toxins coming out of you- but after about 5 or 10 minutes your body is ready for the rest of the class and you will feel more relxed than ever in savasana.
