A Studio a Day

When I think of a yoga retreat my mind fills with visions of yoga classes on a beach, vegetarian meals, and daily massages in an exotic locale. But you don't have to go to an exotic place to have a yoga retreat--there are likely tons of studios close by. Go to a new one every day, take from as many different teachers as you can and instead of a pricey summer yoga retreat, you can have something more like a "yoga adventure."

In fact, the yoga adventure trip may be this summer's trend in the yoga community.

The writers of YoYoYogis (a blog at yoyoyogi.com) are spending their summer exploring 100 different yoga studio in 100 days. They're visiting studios from all over the West Coast, but Seattle to San Diego and blogging about their experiences along the way.

Meanwhile, the folks at YogaMates are trying out 50 studios in 50 days and will be tracking their progress through video blogs.

I wonder if anyone is taking a yoga adventure on the East Coast, then we'd have a nice well-rounded idea of the yoga scene across the country. Have you ever gone on a yoga adventure?

I have a "staycation" coming up in a couple of weeks. Your article gives me an idea. Maybe instead of a studio a day (a little costly for me), I could blend trying new studios with new parks. I live in a city with lots of public parks, golf courses and even beachfront!

I'm thinking "have yoga mat, will travel." Thanks for the inspiration.

What a great idea!

I'm not doing a Yoga adventure like the one you are describing, but we will be visiting a few studios while we are on a vacation later this summer. I do need to point out that if you only get the East Coast and West Coast, you will be missing the nation's heartland, the bread basket of the Americas, the big muddy rivers and studios from the greenest city in Texas (Come visit Houston in the middle of winter for a shocking jolt of green) Boulder, Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, etc. etc. We've got a thriving Yoga scene in these parts of the country too. Wish I had to time to do the tour.

That's fun. I always had it in the back of my mind that I was going to do a "YogaDawg does YogaAmerica" kind of book. Kind of like a Jack Kerouac /Ken Kesey mashup for yoga. Thought it could be pretty funny...

The Best of the East Coast will be the second, but far from the last tour for the YoYoYogis! We just finished day 46 at Spirit Rock just north of San Francisco. We are loving every minute as we uncover the mind-bendin', body-stretchin', peace-providin' practices of these thriving yoga communities. Best of all, we are finding that YOGA is for everybody, if they only take the time to find the YOGA that is right for them... hopefully we are helping people do just that.
