Nap Time Yoga

And the Yoga Buzz Favorite Video of the Week Award goes to . . .

Nap Time Yoga by NECN/ABC in New York!

In this video, a reporter—who appears to be a yoga novice—takes a class focused on relaxation. The confused looks on her face, the uncomfortable glances around the room, and the mention of "nap time," bring back such nostalgic memories of walking into my very first yoga class. I love it!

Were you confused by Savasana (Corpse Pose) when you were new to yoga?

Comments

no, i were not confused.

without tension no relaxation

I completely embraced savasana. After my first yoga session, I was pooped and wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I was confused by most things when I first started doing yoga, and generally found savasana an incredibly welcome relief. Interestingly, though, when practicing at home, I've always found it quite difficult...some part of my mind simply refusing to believe I'm not just lying around when I've got more important stuff to do....

This is just the problem about Savasana. It is not naptime. Teachers should teach that it is not naptime. If a student falls asleep, then that's just what happened, but Savasana is not about taking a nap.

Savasana is a meditative pose, and truly the most difficult pose to master because your mind doesn't have something to do, like focus on standing on one foot. In Savasana, its just you and your mind. You are keeping your mind in control, with nothing to use as a tool but effortless effort.

Yoga is the cessation of the turning of the mind, the "mind-stuff", the constant buzzing our minds do all day long. Savasana is the final pose for the true challenge to control the mind, mano a mano. If a person uses Savasana only for "naptime", they've missed the whole point of yoga.

I can't believe that they treated savasana like it was a new idea only being taught by this teacher! ALL yoga classes should offer savasana; it is where your practice culminates!!!

Yogadawg, you are too funny.

But this blog is what I mean about ridiculous ideas, like Dog yoga. good grief. This is just some teacher looking for that 'niche.' It looks like it's at the Equinox health club, so that says alot. Can't just be satisfied with yoga and relaxation. Gotta gimmick it up....it's beyond annoying.

I was not confused by Savasana when I was new to yoga. It was the icing on the cake. And it is NOT about taking a nap.....taking a nap is NOT savasana, as LIsa so succinctly points out.

I'm going to go do an inversion and get my mind right.
