Chakra Balancing Yoga?
Jivamukti yogini Sharon Gannon recently released her new DVD, Chakra Balancing Yoga, which promises to "open and balance" the chakras through a series of asana, mantras, and affirmations. "When these energy centers are healthy and open, so are we—physically, emotionally, and in our relationships," according to the DVD cover. "But when they are blocked through injury, illness, or disconnection from others, we are blocked from being our best selves."
Do you believe a yoga practice can help you balance your chakras?

In short, yes.
Perhaps a hatha yoga practice will not balance your chakras as quickly as a healing touch session, but over time, your energetic body (pranamayakosha) will be balanced and free of blockages.

please. IF cakras exist at all, and they're not simply agreed upon images for progressive states of consciousness, then you're not going to "balance" them--whatever that means--by watching a video, performing a one-size-fits-all sequence of asanas, and mouthing some standardized affirmations. cakras are subtle centers--people dont seem to understand that theres way more than the usually accounted six or seven--that require extraordinary sensitivity to isolate and engage. if you want to work with your cakras first read the sat cakra nirupana which you can find include in John Woodroffe's The Serpent Power. most western descriptions are way watered down and over simplified--the traditional color scheme does NOT match the color spectrum as you so often see in modern representations--you cant begin to understand the transformative power of a cakra until you've actually studied its iconography, and that takes time and patience. then TURN OFF YOUR TV and direct your attention inward. what happens after that i cant say, each of us has to find his/her own way.

Another way to work on opening your chakras is through Kundalini yoga. Ana Brett and Ravi Singh offer some great yogic techniques for doing this in their dvd titled Kundalini Yoga: A Journey Through the Chakras (that is if you can't find a Kundalini yoga class in your area). Also, Anodea Judith's book _Wheels of Life: A User's Guide to the Chakra System_ includes meditation, asanas and pranayama techniques which correspond to each chakra center. These are located at the end of each chapter.

I do believe in the overall premise of the Chakras. I believe that we all need to conect with the elements that comprise our being, water, earth, air,space--I do think that it all makes sense. The difficult part is trying to stay balanced-a difficult thing for many of us in these trying times. I purchased a Chakra book a few years back and devoted some time to its study. It might by a good time for me to pick it up again, and to shine and brighten up my crown chakra--you know I like the bling--LOL.
