Experienced yoga teachers needed for the V-Day event at the Superdome in New Orleans, April 11 and 12. See my post on March 26 for event details.
Urban Zen Foundation has been asked to participate by creating the Wellbeing Lounge which will treat up to 10,000-20,000 women who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. Urban Zen is looking for
experienced yoga teachers (i.e., at least 10 years of teaching and/or RYT 500 hours) who can assist in the Wellbeing Lounge by providing 15-minute one-on-one yoga sessions focusing on restorative yoga, meditation, and breath awareness.
Please e-mail Lisa Stewart (lisas@yeeyoga.com) if you are interested in participating. Provide a brief overview of your yoga training, who you studied with, and your experience in teaching yoga and working with students one-on-one.
The third annual DC Yoga Week will take place April 12 - 18. Participating studios will offer at least one free class and daily $5 classes, along with discounts on additional classes, class packages, and yoga merchandise. In addition, Yoga on the Mall will take place on April 13 at the North East quadrant of the Washington Monument grounds between 1 and 4 p.m. There will be two free classes, from 1-2 p.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. For more info, visit www.dcyogaweek.com.
VDAY was created 10 years ago by Eve Ensler, author of "The Vagina Monologues," to help stop violence against women and girls. This year, VDAY will take place on April 12 and feature international performances of "The Vagina Monologues," music, and more. It's being held at the Superdome and yoga classes will run every hour in the Yoga Suite, a 15,000 square foot room within the Superdome. For more information, visit www.vday.org.
In effort to raise awareness and funds for VDAY, Bindu Yoga Studio, located at 5913 South Dixie Hwy, Suite G, West Palm Beach, FL, will be hosting an event on March 28 at 7pm featuring a screening of the documentary Until the Violence Stops, refreshments, and a silent auction. For more information, visit www.bindu-studio.com.
A Buddha statue from the Coninx Museum in Zurich sold for $5 million at Christie's auction house in New York, reports swissinfo.ch. (There was no information on who bought the statue.) The statue is considered the most important Buddhist sculpture worldwide to be auctioned. Critics say the sale is in breach the foundation's principles. Do museums have an obligation to keep important works of art accessible to the public? Do most museums have some sort of code of ethics?
Baan Unrak is a community development project serving children and mothers in need in Sangklaburi, Thailand. The organization provides vegetarian meals and also offers yoga and meditation classes. Children perform in 'yoga shows' which are meant to help increase self-esteem. You can read more about Baan Unrak and even watch a video of one of the yoga performances at www.baanunrak.org.
A study conducted at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, India, suggests certain forms of yoga, along with regular treatment, can help reduce seizures in patients suffering from refractory epilepsy (those who continue to experience seizures despite trying a variety of treatment options). The yoga group practiced Surya Namaskar, Ardhakati Chakrasana, Bhujangasana, Salabhasana and Savasana followed by pranayama for 20 minutes, six days a week. The study was published in Epilepsy and Behaviour (Vol 12, No 2). Please write in if yoga has helped reduce your seizures.
Earlier this month, the Thai government said it was "investigating claims that supposedly celibate Buddhist monks have been using a U.S.-based social networking website to flirt with women," reports the Associated Press. A watchdog group, the Network of Civilians to Protect the Nation, the Religion and the King, claims that monks are using www.hi5.com to flirt with women. A senior Culture Ministry official, Ladda Thangsupachai, said "Cyberspace can be very useful for monks," Ladda said. "But it's wrong to use it to pick up girls." Thoughts?
If you live in San Francisco, you may have seen or heard about Tamara Standard (aka Yoga Girl) teaching yoga on the tough streets of the Tenderloin and Mission districts in an effort to bring yoga to people who might not have the opportunity to explore it. “My purpose in the Tenderloin has been to be an initiator into experiencing a new level of consciousness. It’s a privilege and a honor to share this unity,” she explains. You can watch Tamara at www.yogagirlsf.com. Let us know about other people practicing unique forms of karma yoga, or selfless service.
Often, the creators of a controversial movie allow religious groups a chance to preview the film. For example, the Catholic church screened The Passion of the Christ and The Da Vinci Code. Now, the Universal Society of Hinduism is requesting that Mike Myers' The Love Guru, which opens June 20, be shown to Hindu leaders and organizations before its release, reports Cinema Blend.
"Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion followers and a rich philosophical thought, and it should not be taken lightly," states Rajan Zed, president of the society.
Is this a reasonable request? Or is Rajan Zed being overly sensitive, as some critics have said?
A construction worker buried alive for two hours in Ningbo, China, survived by meditating and slowing his breathing. Wang Jianxin, a buddhist, should have died within five minutes, reports the U.K. paper the Mirror. "I knew the air wouldn't last, so I made myself relax and concentrated on my breathing by meditation," says Jianxin. "It was very still and quiet down there. I was surprised at how easy it was to focus my mind and achieve inner calm, even though I believed I was facing death." Do you know anyone who has overcome a grave situation via meditation?
According to various press reports, actor Tobey Maguire (of Spiderman fame), who is a vegan, is asking visitors to his home to remove all leather items before entering. One guest to his house said, "I've seen women take off their shoes, belts, and even leave their $4,000 bags at the door. Tobey says the smell of leather makes him sick—he never has it around him."
"I don't judge people who eat meat, that's not for me to say, but the whole thing just sort of bums me out," says Maguire.
What do you think? Has Maguire gone too far or is this reasonable? Have you experienced similar requests in your life?
If so, you might enjoy Punk Rock Yoga, being offered in Boston, New York, Seattle and Toronto. "I love the different kind of music, and it really gets people who wouldn't go into a yoga study into a class because it's in a different environment," instructor Erin Bell told CanWest News Service . "Yoga is really about exploring things for yourself and so I find it goes along with that philosophy." Perhaps now New York's CBGBs can reopen and offer yoga classes.
