On the mat, naked, and eating chocolate....

OK, maybe not naked AND eating chocolate. But a recent article in Newsweek reports on weekly nude yoga classes at One Taste Urban Retreat Center in San Francisco and a Venice, Calif. instructor who uses chocolate to "make participants more aware of their senses." Can anyone attest to the benefits of yoga in the buff or chocoyoga?

It is my understanding, the Greek athletes rubbed themselves with olive oil before doing their exercises in the nube.

I don't think nudity adds an advantage over non-nude yoga, because habituation will soon sap the juice out of fascination with nudity. But yoga will stand on its own.
Regarding chocolate, due to sugar, its a harmful thing not only to teeth but it will also turn you into sugaroholic. Seen from the angle of blood chemistry, alcohol and sugar are same. But dark chocolate has some plus points: It has a substance that converts into Phenyl-Ethyl-Amin (PEA) that pushes up brain's opiate level up and hence the mood. Dark chocolate is also good for heart. So use it in limits.

I lead a monthly naked yoga practice and frequently practice naked myself. Why? Because when you are naked, you are closer to your true self, undefined by clothes. You are more present and feel your body more fully. How often do we really notice the movement, texture, weight of the air around us? And, I believe, you more quickly shed your judgements, fears and in securities about the body and, especially by practicing naked with others, by showing up with nothing but your ordinary and yet extraordinary animal body, you come to feel a deep connection with all life. I could go on and on, but the I highly recommend trying it yourself, perhaps alone at first, and observing.

I do my home practice naked. It took some time to get use to the lack of...support in a certain area. But once I did, my speed and alignment improved. Sweaty bike shorts slowed me down. I can now go deeper into the asanas without the restriction of clothing.

I recently wrote a post about this topic with a few links to other places where naked yoga is being practiced: http://blogs.glam.com/glamspirit/2007/08/09/naked-yoga/

I have practiced nude both at home and at the beach, when its warm enough. I understand that it is not a good idea to practice cold and it would be wise to bear this in mind if trying nude yoga. Also, I found that as a man, my genitals were quite distracting in shoulder stand and dog pose, initially. Having practiced (clothed) in a public museum as part of the exhibition, I am able to filter out distractions, but this was a new challenge. I have had the opportunity to practice nude in mixed groups, but have avoided this, as doing the dog pose etc in a group is something I would prefer to miss unless we were all in one line side to side :-)

I practice my yoga nude at home. It's a wonderful experience and

I find that my body relaxes beyond that of my clothed and thereby partially restricted form.

It's very liberating too and I feel totally free and at one when I practice in this way. I just wish it was optional at class!

:)

I have been praticing yoga for several years now. I would love to find out more on a place to try the nude yoga, Anne mentioned she taught a class once a month, is that in the south florida area. Would like to know more.

I have practiced nude yoga at home for many years, and as others have stated, find it very liberating. I would like to find a class that practices nude yoga. I think this would be a personal growth experience which does not occur in clothed classes that I have been. Unfortunately, in the part of the country I live in, it will be very unlikely to find nude yoga classes. However, that does not keep me from continuing to go to classes, gaining from the experience of the instructor.

I have practiced yoga for over 1 year and go to classes 2-3 times per week. It is definitely more constricting to do yoga in clothing. At home I do 1 hour of yoga nude often and it is so much easier to do the various poses! Especially the twists and leg extensions. When you really get into the practice in a hard routine, you almost forget your nude and after awhile, it feels natural and normal to practice this way!

I also really enjoy practicing yoga nude at home. With candles lit and incense, it's almost like practicing in a Himalayan cave. Almost.
