Yoga, the video game

An upcoming video game from Nintendo called Wii Fit, which will be in stores in early 2008, will come with a pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board (to stand on) that will guide users through an array of activities, including yoga. Is this something you would consider using?

I don't think I will be using this medium for yoga practice.
Wii Fit? It just sounds like
a healthy McDonalds to me. Just my personal view, but isn't that what's this is about?

Am thinking of designing a game for Yogis which pits Yoga teachers from different schools of Yoga against each other as they attempt to out-pose those from other schools. You will start out as a 200 hr level trained teacher and with each level, you will advance to the next stage of teacher training. Bonus levels will find you as a Yoga Guru, Yoga Star and finally the founder of a famous new School of Yoga. Expect this game to show up soon in a Yoga studio near you...

Yes, I would use it. AND hopefully it will expose a whole new set of people (young ones) to the benefits of yoga and the importance of exercise in their lives.

if i had a wii i would try this game!

I don't think it is intended for those who practice yoga. It seems more like a game that incorporates ideas from several disciplines. I think it is a good thing. It might introduce more people to the physical enjoyment of yoga and therefore expand our community.

I think everything Nintendo has been doing from the "train your brain" games to "Wii Sports" is wonderful. I will definitely be getting Wii Fit. Looking at the game strictly as a Yoga tool, you can see how perfectly balanced your standing poses are between, and among, the feet. And if Nintendo can introduce Yoga to a new market, wouldn't that be great?

Yes! It sounds like fun.
I'd definitely do it if I had a wii (which I don't...but want...)

I wouldn't use this game, personally, because I need a live guide, but my kids have Wii, and I think it could be a good introduction to yoga for some.

WE'll try it for our kids...sounds like fun!

This would be perfect for my sister as gaming is all she does! I wouldn't mind trying the game although I like the mental calming of listening to soothing music or the silence that is caused by the whole house still being asleep.

My son and I have a wii and we LOVE it. It's a lot of fun. I will get the balance board and we'll have a blast using it, I'm sure!

I'll absolutely be buying a balance board: I don't see it as a replacement for my home practice, but I think the way the balance board assesses your center of gravity/etc. would be a fun tool and beneficial to a serious yogi's practice. I've practiced wearing a heart monitor, and that was incredibly enlightening as well.

I just bought a wii for my kids for Christmas. I plan on getting this game and board once it is released. I live in an area where yoga is not offered, yet I practice using Nicki Doane's dvd's - I am a beginner. All the info I get is through research, dvd, and books about yoga, esp the internet. I do, however, understand this game is not a substitute for having a trained yoga instructor in my home. Maybe one of these days, I will be able to locate a nearby studio so I may take classes regularly. I love it! My kids do it with me, which is great for them, too.

We just got Wii fit 10 days ago. My family loves it. I also love the yoga and use the yoga poses to stretch before strength training and the aerobics (also in the Wii fit game). It is a great introduction to yoga although the poses are not easy for novices, you must remain mostly still. I find myself spotting my 6 year old to ensure he doesn't fall off the board. They also have included a game in the Wii fit called lotus focus, which is basically meditation, but if you don't hold still you get rudely interrupted. It is fun overall as a challenge to try to do your best competing against your family and friends. We use it daily and are really enjoying it. I recommend it to everyone. Wii fit will make you sweat in a fun way!!

I have already ordered Wii Fit. I think it will be a wonderful way to introduce my family to yoga.

My wife and I are considering getting the Wii Fit. The thing that you have to realize when looking at this "game" is that Nintendo is trying to jump in a new market. The Wii is such a great platform for physical activity indoors. You can play tennis and golf when it is raining outside, which is always nice. It keeps you upright and the blood flowing. I honestly feel Wii Fit will never replace a yoga studio when it comes to the poses and overall instruction. However, it is an excellent beginners guide to the wonderful world of yoga. I think this will help people calm down and relax. As a result maybe the yoga community will grow by leaps and bounds! Also I hope this will get my wife to become active again. She is so stressed with work all the time, I think yoga will be the key to her relaxation and stress relief.

I've had the wii fit for 2 weeks and can certainly sympathise with those who believe that it will never be a substitute for yoga practice/training, or "real" exercise.

however, i think we have to give credit where it is due. wii fit is not designed to be a substitute for these things. wii fit is designed to get people active, and maybe even more importantly, get people more active together.

Wii fit is an enormous amount of fun. I find myself happily doing lunges (which I otherwise skip in my regular workout routines), perfecting the art of stillness (let's face it, we all have days where we get out of shivasana too soon because we have to go somewhere after the yoga studio), and above all, bringing yoga and other exercise to the living room.

I think wii fit is a brilliant idea - a breakthrough in video gaming - and a whole lot of fun.

I think it is a lovley idea. It may be " a helathy mcdonalds" but for some, its a step in the right direction. working nights, my kids dont have the option to go outside some days, and i would much rather them play the wii sports than traditional video games. i plan on buying wii fit, its a nice alternative to "real exercise." Something for my family to do together inside on a rainy day! we LOVE wii sports pack! After all, isnt yoga about being open minded and trying new things to better yourself and surroundings?
ciao

I tried the Wii Fit Yoga for the first time last night. I have a mixed reaction over my experience. On the positive side, I am excited that more people will be exposed to yoga via this gaming system. Any time yoga can reach people, I am all for it! On the negative side, however, I was concerned about some of the postures included in the yoga sequence - shoulderstand, in particular. Of course, the best guidance for movement into and out of postures would be with a trained yoga instructor, and the Wii Fit is not an adequate substitute.
I guess I'm just worried about injury to people who do not have an appropriate sense of body awareness.

Got Wii Fit for Father's Day. Today is my fourth day using and I'm writing a comment on this blogs because of it because I want to learn more about the discipline. Today I launched Google to look for information on yoga and this site was the first hit. Wii Fit intoduced me to Yoga for the first time in my life. Have done some of the poses I find that I like it and want to get good at it. I have a feeling that a lot of people will do the same thing I did.

I am fortunate enough to own Wii Fit and absolutely LOVE it! I had never tried yoga before Wii Fit. After trying the first 5 poses that were available (more poses become available the longer you "play"), I was hooked. So I participated in my first yoga class the next day at the gym. I will now be incorporating yoga into my weekly workout routine. Had it not been for the Wii, I probably would never have tried it!

While this "game" is certainly no substitute for regular exercise at the gym or on a home gym (since the exercise cannot be sequenced into a full workout), I think it is a wonderful way to get inactive people active again, while having fun!
