Yoga for PMS
New research shows that yoga can relieve both psychological and physical symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. It also appears yoga can lift levels of an antidepressant-like hormone, allopregnanolone, typically low in chronic sufferers. Dr. Ratna Sharma, a physiologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in New Delhi, told the World Congress of Neuroscience in Melbourne, "The fact that [yoga] appears to influence symptoms and also change levels of an important hormone is very significant indeed." Sharma said women with the worst psychological symptoms benefited most. Do certain asanas or pranayama help you with PMS?

Of course Yoga can help with conditions such as PMS - the issue is which Yoga techniques. Pascimottanasana may well be one, but asanas designed to sublime energy, such as Uddiyana bandha (done gently of course), and especially sirsasana and sarvangasana are well known in tantric schools as must-dos for women at this time in their cycle. The whole issue of tantric yoga, femininity, sexuality, and childbirth is being presented in an intense 1-day workshop by our most senior female teacher Dr. Mihaiela Pentiuc - August 24th in Bristol, England. Downward facing dog is particularly helpful for me with warrior poses. Actually, every pose helps my body balance at "those times of the month." Mostly, doing yoga helps me sleep since PMS usually gets me wound up. If I can sleep, then I am not so tense, and that helps deal with PMS. Limiting caffeine and alcohol also helps.

Yes -- yoga does help me with PMS and with my mood in general. I feel calmer all day after I practice yoga first thing in the morning. Namaste!

I find a gentle restorative class benefits me most during my period. Extended Child, Janu Sirasana, and Supported Savasana are all helpful for me.
