Awareness is Curative
There are piles of books on Ayurveda in the market right now. Most include short quizzes that match you to one of the three doshas--Kapha, Pitta, and Vata--and then prescribe eating and living habits according to your named dosha. I had always felt that trapping myself as a Vata was limiting, and well, imprecise. But today, during Scott Blossom's "Food for the Yogic Journey" lecture, I learned that I could have components of all thee doshas and that Ayurveda is a life science that prescribes to unique individuals--and not "types" of people.
Scott went into more detail and theory in a two-hour lecture than any book I've come across. He taught that a food can be either poison or medicine to your body depending on quantity and seasons, and that your dosha constitution will change throughout your life. But my greatest lesson learned today was that Ayruvedic healing, like yoga, is about listening to your body to create an awareness that can cure.
