my new yogi

Eagerly anticipating our first class, Jackson and I returned to Yoga Tree Valencia, where just weeks earlier, we had completed our prenatal yoga series. It seemed that every mother in San Francisco had the same idea as me today. Floor space was rapidly disappearing as mother and baby pairs filtered into the once tranquil studio. The final count was 29 mama/baby couples, which was twice the usual amount! I had expected a much smaller group for our reentry, but I went with the flow and quickly secured one of the few spots left. I set up my mat with a blanket in front for Jackson and began nursing. Looking around the room, I imagined that if I could manage to relax into at least one pose amidst the wild baby energy, I could do most anything.

As if on cue, a delightful chorus of newborns wailed as older babes harmonized with coo's and ah-goo's. I laughed at myself for actually thinking it would be otherwise. The chorus was music to Jackson's ears, as he sweetly drifted off to sleep. I gently laid him down on his blanket and settled into Savassana. Soon after, I noticed that my neighbor was reaching her hand toward Jackson and trying to soothe him. I immediately sat up and was amazed to discover that the cry I had been hearing was from my baby!

Jackson nursed for the entire rest of class, which had only just begun. I watched the other women workout and hoped I could remember at least one pose to do at home. Sadly, my vision of fitting into my size-4 jeans was fading. As the babies wailed on, I noticed that our instructor, Jane Austin , didn't miss a beat. She simply raised her volume when necessary and reminded all of the nursers that even though we weren't doing the poses, we could still be very present in class. How? Kegels, kegels and more kegels—ugh, wasn't I done with those?

Comments

Welcome to the world young yogi! You are doing wonderful stuff and I look forward to reading more about your adventures in yoga class.

i think this new addition to the site... along with you and your witty angles like this piece... will give me hope that i too can get into the flow with mommy and me yoga.
right now i have a two year old and she is much more interested in pushing me over during any downwards poses than joining me.
sigh.
thanks !

Hey Naome Its your neise person and I though Id make a comment...I like its a good inspiration for parents...

Dear Naomi,
I read your blog a few days ago and something kept bugging me. There's so much more yoga possible than contorting yourself. Great and healthy things for you to try besides Kegels are Eye yoga (there are oodles of resources on this online), also yoga for your neck, shoulders, and of course all those fantastic conscious breathing excercises you can do anytime. Personally I like to open my class with eye yoga exercises..and later when you are used to them, you add to to your fave poses like the Warrior and look at the horizon, back to your hand, travel up the arm...back to the horizon... you get the picture !

Good luck from a fellow Yoga Mom.
