Practice Lightly on the Earth

The Green Yoga Association is here at the Estes Park conference to offer support and gentle reminders to the yoga
community on ways to green our yoga practice. Green Yoga
Advisory Board member Jessica Brainard is spreading the
word at their outreach booth with information about
Earth-friendly alternatives to toxic PVC yoga mats, an
invitation to join the Green Studio Program, and other
resources to reconnect yoga practitioners to the
ecological roots of yoga.

Certification questions answered

The Yoga Alliance staff and board members are in the marketplace. They say that they have enjoyed
meeting the many Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT), Directors of yoga teacher
training programs and yoga practitioners who are attending
the Estes Park conference.

There are several issues that they have been talking to folks about... including the ending of the RYT200 Independent Study track.

Yoga Journal thanks them for coming and for providing the community with this valuable resource.

Generosity: Satya Jewlery has a raffle going

One of our wonderful sponsors of this conference is running a raffle from their table in the marketplace to benefit youth yoga programs.

Lucky winners will get cool jewelery and teens will be enriched through nonprofit yoga camps and courses.

Groups benefiting are:

Teen Camp at Sivananda Ashram

Omega Teen Camp

Yoga for Youth

If you are here, stop by their booth. If not, stop by the website (you can't get raffle tickets there, but you can see some cool jewelry from a heart-centered jeweler).

Reader Feedback: Thanks for the inspirations!

We are so happy to be reaching out and bringing the events of this conference to you through this blog. Here is one of our success stories...

Thanks for the blog! Like other readers, I feel connected to what's happening there in Estes Park. It's a good feeling, and what I've learned has helped my practice already. I like all aspects of the blog - great pictures, great to see and hear the A/V, and nice to know what poses those lucky folks present are working on. As a beginner of 4 years, I'm both encouraged by knowing most of the poses studied in the intensive, and even more humbled to begin to realise how deep this ocean of Yoga is.
I'm looking forward even more to seeing Mr. Iyengar at Davies Hall in S.F. next week.
Jeremy Shaw, Palo Alto, CA

Mr. Iyengar will be in San Francisco next week. We hope to see many of you there.

A letter home

A conference attendee has shared with us an email she sent back home after the first day of the conference. She has our loving gratitude.

So I was more than a little nervous about doing yoga with 799 other people. But I tried to be brave. I am here in Colorado with my teachers and peers from San Francisco. We flew into Denver and made our way to the buses which took us to Estes Park -- 8000 feet up. The altitude has made me light-headed, or is it the clear sky that is overwhelming me? The bare and beautiful mountains surround us on all sides, stronger and taller then I could ever be. The wind is whispering to us softly to remember our manners and to be obedient yogis.

Last night we had an orientation and every one of the 800 seats were taken. There was Rodney who can't stop holding hands with a particular exquiste woman, and Baron Baptiste with his signature do-rag. And Annette Benning and I am sure a variety of other famous people I don't recognitze.

Reader Feedback: Experiencing the virtual conference

Making connections across time and space. Here are some nice words from Holly in Bethlehem, PA.

I'm an Iyengar Yoga student from Pennsylvania who was poised to register for the conference at exactly the time it opened, but unfortunately, the registration closed before I was able to get in. This Blog has allowed me to feel like I'm part of the larger community of practitioners who are there in Guruji's presence, soaking it in and sending it along to those of us who are practicing back home, with gratitude in our hearts that we can share in this historic event from wherever we might be. Listening to yesterday's audio/video footage, I applauded along with everyone while watching Guruji stride into the conference room, and I cried and laughed listening to the wisdom he shared in his opening remarks. Thank you for this amazing opportunity from afar, it feels good to be so close in heart.

A visitor from PA checks in

My name is Janet Burgan and I live in Pine Mill, Pennsylvania. I have been practicing Iyengar yoga for 3 years. Thank you so much for the article including the routine from the Iyengar Intensive Class 1. I used it as my practice today, and through it, feel connected to what is happening in Estes Park. Good work everyone!! Peace.

Quick Takes

I asked Michael from Boston what it was like studying with Mr.Iyengar:

"I felt like I was on a large boat in the ocean, tossed about by giant waves. And every cell in my body was accosted - by love."

Quick Takes

Tom and Grace from Lakewater, FL have come to every single Yoga Journal Conference since the first one was offered in 1995. I asked Tom what he looked forward to most this year. He laughed, "Studying with Mr. Iyengar, of course. This is the third time I've studied with him. First in Ann Arbor for his 75th birthday, in Pune for his 80th, and now here."

I asked him what he remembered most about studying with Mr.Iyengar. "The time he shoved me in Triangle," he said smiling, "I'll never forget that." Did you learn anything from that, I asked him? "Yep," he answered, "That I have to learn to breath more deeply."

***

On the mat in Mr. Iyengar's class this morning, a young woman sat next to me. She looked sad. I asked her how she was doing. She told me she was so happy to be here, on her mat, in this room, awaiting Mr. Iyengar to come in. But her grandmother was dying and that she felt conflicted being here. Her eyes filled with tears. "I don't even know you," she said, "and here I am crying." Yoga can do that. The practice opens the heart like few other disciplines. "How does she feel knowing you are here? I asked her. "She isn't conscious," she said, "but she would probably tell me, that life goes on."

***

Jean from WI said she was surprised at how moved she was to be in the presence of Guruji. "Everything I learned over all these years, embodied in this man. He brings everything down to such a simple level. And with just a word, your whole pose changes."

Yoga, Yoga Everywhere!

As a relatively new yoga practioner, every time I think about what I am about to experience, I feel this incredible rush of excitement, awe, anticipation, and gratitude. I still can't quite believe that I will be watching, learning and photographing instructors, musicians, landscapes, other practioners, and the little things that make these conferences so special. I hope to share that with you. I'll be attending a few of the beginner sessions as well as some of the therapeutic sessions. Interested in Restorative Yoga? Just let me know and I'll drop by Judith Lasater's session. How about Ayurveda 101? John Douillard is teaching a class on that too. So what's your interest? I'll check it out.
