Poses That Make You Crazy

Okay, what is it with triangle pose????
(Those of you who are experts need not read this one. Go back to practicing your one-armed handstands with your legs in full lotus. I adore you, I do. I worship your accomplishments. But today's thoughts are not for you.)
Triangle pose. Pretty basic. Do the triangle thing and reach forward to grab your first toe.
For the entire 10 months of my gorgeous, intensive involvement in yoga, this is exactly what happens with my right leg. I reach down, gently grab the first toe of my right foot, and look up to the ceiling. I breathe slowly and evenly. I don't care if Rob and Cristina (my teachers) count to 29 on this one. Happiness.
Not so with my left leg. On my left side, I reach down, all the while thinking, I am so flexible, I am flexibility itself, I am flexibility incarnate and reincarnate. And my hand reaches mid-calf. Not an inch lower.
Makes me crazy. I know, I know, patience, kindness, acceptance of what is. Even if what is is a daily reminder of my exaggerated imbalance. All I wish for is balance, I tell myself.
So guess what happened this week? For no reason I can think of, my triangle pose has changed!
But not the way you think it might. Not the way it happens in fairy tales and romantic comedy yoga videos. Now neither of my hands can reach my toe! I mean it. I just tried it again before sitting here to write.
Both sides to mid-calf. Not an inch lower.
My thoughts? Be careful what you wish for. I wanted balance. I got it.
Is there a pose that drives you crazy? (Okay, if it's the one-armed handstand with full lotus, you can play, too.)
Thanks to the yoga poses that drive us crazy, and thanks to you for the conversation.

Hand to big toe and Cow pose. The first makes me fall over and I still have yet to get my leg straight. But mostly . . . cow pose! I can't get my arms behind me like that and my shoulders hurt every time.

Oh boy, one legged king pigeon drives me nuts! And even worse is the forward bend over the front leg in the same position.
My knees are screaming, and/or I get cramp in my toes or my hip. That being said, I know that I have had sessions when I've been able to do this with no issues! What's up with that?

Revolved Triangle Pose - I just CAN NOT get my back leg straight!

I have steel rods running 18 inches along the length of my spine, so many, many poses are challenging for me. (Consider that!!) Of the ones I can (sort of) do, Lotus is the most perplexing to me. I can only bring one foot up at a time and it often gives me pain in the ankle/foot, not while I'm sitting in the pose, but when I bring the foot down.

Ardha Chandrasana! Block or no block, I absolutely cannot even begin to look up from the floor and out to the side without toppling over. It's the only balancing posture that just throws me for a loop so far in my practice. I've tried laser focus, emptying my mind completely, smiling, scowling ... you name it. I'm now taking a new approach though and really trying to practice patience in this pose. It's okay if I can't turn to face the side of the room or even really glance over at the corner of my mat. Right now I'm just trying to focus on aligning my hips correctly in the pose and pushing out through the extended leg. I figure in time, the rest will come. The past two or so classes I've gone to I've noticed a nice increase in balance in my hips so I'll just keep working my way into it slowly but surely. But yeah, definitely a frustrating pose that makes you think 'I should be able to do this!' and quickly reminds you that the ego is not a muscle you are working with during practice :)

Revolved Triangle and Plough. I love love love Revolved Triangle and revolving to the left is satisfying, but when it's time to revolve to the right, it's nearly impossible to get into the full pose and turn my head. I am unstable and frustrated. Plough, on the other hand, is just uncomfortable. My cups runneth over, and in plough, they just choke me. The arm balances that require straight knees (like firefly) are nearly impossible as well. I think this is because I practiced karate for 5 years and the front snap kick has shortened or tightened the muscles required to fully express that pose.

Side Plank......I don't have one bit of enjoyment from this pose......from my shaking arm, to my wrist that is screaming, please stop......but I see people in class flow through this pose with one leg in the air and one arm up towards the ceiling, looking completly blissful. I guess to each their own. I still try....because half moon pose took me 2 years to accomplish and now I love and can balance and hang out in ths pose for minutes.......

Anything involving my hamstrings. I'm a new yoga teacher who looks like a new yoga student in my forward fold!
Megan, try cinching a strap over the tops of your breasts before plough. It can buy you enough space to use at least one breathing whole.

Hi.. i am very new to Yoga and I love it! However, I feel very clumsy and awkward doing something of the very beautiful poses I wacth on my new DVD. How many times a week would you recommend me practicing in order to become better and gain more confidence? Thank you again for your insight. Tara

Full Lotus! After 14 years practice, still can't make it enjoyable or even bearable. I just dont think Im made that way.

Oh god, I hate the wide-legged seated forward fold! First of all, my legs are not particularly wide. Second, there's definitely no forward bending happening. In fact, I have to put my hands on the floor behind me just to sit fully upright. And STILL my pelvis is tipped the wrong way! Ugh. At least I've got the seated part down.
I know I should practice it just a little daily, and it would get better. Eventually. Maybe. I'm pretty sure I don't have it in me though.

I hate, hate, hate, oh how I hate, Extended Side Angle pose. Everytime I go into it with hand to the floor I feel like I am being suffocated and I start getting very angry. I guess I need to stay in this wretched pose long enough to see what that is all about, but I really really don't want to!

Oooh Colleen, I don't love that one either. Something about the way my hips are shaped, I feel like some strange bit of my body is being squashed and contorted on itself. Not fun!
Staying with un-fun poses are hard, but it's part of why we're doing yoga. Staying with difficult situations, learning to confront the tough stuff and work our way through it... ok, I guess I'll go practice some of my least loved poses now and see what happens!
