Getting Ready
I'm starting to pack my bags. Yoga pants, check. Yoga blanket, check. Block, check. Mat, check
This will be my third visit to Estes Park. I love practicing yoga surrounded by tall mountains. I feel insignificant in the very best possible way. But this year is different. I'm not just studying yoga, I'm studying with Yogacharya BKS Iyengar.
I am coming to Estes Park not only to work, but to experience Guruji and the transmission of the Iyengar lineage. The teachers who have most deeply affected my practice have studied directly under Mr. Iyengar, and I am curious to meet the source of their inspiration. In his wonderful new book, "Light on Life," Mr. Iyengar writes about what it means to have yoga intelligence in each of your cells. After ten years of study, I have the tiniest glimpse of what he might mean. I may not embody that intelligence in this lifetime, but it's wonderful to sense such a possibility.
I am honored and thrilled to study with Guruji. But also, oh, just a wee bit intimidated. I joke with my co-workers that if they need me, they'll find me in very last space in the back by the door. I can't imagine what it's like to learn from someone who might embody the kind of wisdom and intelligence he writes about. But in a few days I'll find out. Just save me the mat by the door.
